BBC Press Release

Quote:
The BBC confirmed today that it will reveal the identity of the 11th Doctor as part of a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential to be aired on BBC One tomorrow, Saturday 3 January 2009, at 5.35pm (UK time).

Following the announcement in October 2008 that David Tennant would be stepping down from his role as the Doctor at the end of 2009, speculation has been mounting as to who would take over from him for the fifth series of this iconic BBC drama that will air in 2010.

With a new creative team in place for the new series led by Executive Producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger, the casting of the new Doctor was job number one to be completed before scripts could be finalised and shooting could begin in summer 2009.

In the Doctor Who special, to be aired tomorrow at 5.35pm, the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction to being the new, 11th incarnation of one of television's most loved characters.

Head Of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, said: "We are so pleased to have been able to cast this person as the new Doctor. We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own – I just can't wait to tell everyone who it is – it has been a nail-biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!"

Am I the only one hoping the new creative team decided to go with someone a little older?  I really miss not being younger than the Doctor.  Let's have some grey hair on the new Doctor!

Well, that's not who I was expecting to get the role. I've seen Matt Smith in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. He's mighty young. Still, I'm willing to give him a chance, and I'm sure Donna Noble will have something hilarious to say about his new look and Rose will want to trade in her Doctor for the new model.

Oh please. He's so young he'd struggle to convince people he's a doctor, never mind the Doctor. This is it - I'm officially done with this show. Good night all. See on the flipside once the series eventually dies again and the books are allowed to be decent once more.

I am surprised. His name was mentioned on Who forums but he was always fourth or fifth in line, so fortunately there was still that element of surprise in the announcement. I would have like an actor in his late thirties or his early fourties, but he will be 28 by the time he appears on screen so not as young as everyone makes out.

Since I'm American, this almost goes without saying, but I've never heard of him.
Also: Curse you, Vale, you got my hopes up mentioning Bill.

I'm sure many of the fanboys are murderously unhappy with the choice for the 11th Doctor, but they didn't like Eccleston or Tennant either. It's typical. I think with a new producer and new writers, the show is going to move into some interesting territory. I just want Donna back for something...even a finale. Just watched her again in Turn Left and she absolutely was the heart and soul of the series.

I have never actaully seen Matt Smith on television before, this must be his largest role.

That's probably what fledgling fandom said when we got Tom Baker. You might at least give him the benefit of the doubt.

Smith is going to have to work pretty hard to make a believer out of me.  As far as I can tell he's a Tennant clone:  tall, skinny, weird hair.  And 26?!  I never thought I'd live to see the day when the Doctor was younger than me (37).  The one big plus of the 2010 season is going to be having Stephen Moffat at the helm.  I've liked most of what he's done so far for Doctor Who.  Am I the only one  hoping Moffat gives us a Henchliffian rennaisance of gothic horror?

Oh, and I'm hoping for a fairly gruesome and physically harrowing death for #10.  We didn't get an 8th to 9th regeneration, and the 9th to 10th didn't really give me a feeling of genuine danger to the Doctor.  In the past the Doctor regenerated for fairly obvious reasons (body wore out, radiation poisoning, fell off a radar tower, etc.).  All I have left to sustain my Whovian fervor through 2009 is the flame-bright wish that the specials don't revolve around Rose and the pseudo-Doctor.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only who's never heard of Matt Smith (who I now can't help thinking of as the Medical Student).  I'll give him a fair chance, but frankly his youth does count against him.  It really is about time they cast an older man in the part again.  If I was producing the show, I'd have brought back Colin Baker (he looks extremely Doctorish these days, and we already know he can play the part) and I'd have brought him back without regenerating the character.  This would be simple to do - just maroon the Doctor on some planet somewhere for a few decades.  When we catch up with him again, he's just naturally grown older.  Saves a precious regeneration.

I do find it interesting that, for the most part, the Doctor has been growing younger and younger.

So, I'm thinking we should start throwing out ideas about how #10 is going to die. Should it be meaningful? Accidental? Willing?
Since the next Doctor is already selected, I've love to see a transition ala Logopolis; but with the next Doctor actually featuring in it.
I know I'm in the minority in this forum as a fan of Tennant, but I'm not afraid to say I'll miss him, and hope that they eventually do another multi-Doctor special; or another crossover into Rose's universe so we can see him again.
