Recurring Characters:
The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce UNIT is an international organisation formed to combat alien invasions and the like. Its members are mostly soldiers from the countries in which they operate. We first saw UNIT in The Invasion (Classic Series Season 6), and the Third Doctor became scientific advisor to UNIT in Spearhead from Space (Classic Series Season 7). He continued in this role even after his exile to Earth was lifted in The Three Doctors (Classic Series Season 10). Various incarnations of the Doctor have aided UNIT on subsequent occasions.
Jo Grant Jo Grant first met the (Third) Doctor in Terror of the Autons (Classic Series Season 8), where she became his Assistant at UNIT. She got the job thanks to her uncle, even though she failed science at school. She kept that job for the rest of his exile to Earth, and became his travelling companion after his exile was lifted in The Three Doctors (Classic Series Season 10). She left UNIT and the Doctor to marry nobel prize winner Clifford Jones, a noted environmentalist, in The Green Death (Classic Series Season 10).
Sergeant John Benton Sergeant Benton is an officer in UNIT. He first met the Doctor in The Invasion (Classic Series Season 6). He frequently worked with the Doctor during the Doctor's time as UNIT's scientific advisor.
The Empress: The Empress is the ruler of the Earth Empire towards the end of the third Millenium. She is connected to CentComp, the computer system that runs both Earth and the Empire. She appeared in Original Sin (Virgin New Adventure) and So Vile A Sin (Virgin New Adventure), though both these books take place later in her timeline than her appearance in this story.
