Placement: Not long before 100,000 BC (Classic Series Season 1), the first televised story.
Links: This book could be seen as a prequel to An Unearthly Child (Classic Series Season 1), the first Doctor Who episode.
Doctor:
The First The first Doctor looks like a human in his sixties. He is physically quite frail, but has a keen intellect. He is paternalistic towards his granddaughter Susan, and has a degree of arrogance towards others.
Companions:
Susan Foreman: Susan is usually described as the Doctor's granddaughter. She and the Doctor left their home planet in Lungbarrow (Virgin New Adventure). Susan adopted the surname Foreman whilst staying on Earth during 1963.
Recurring Characters:
Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright: Ian and Barbara are teachers at Coal Hill School who followed Susan home and became the Doctor's companions in An Unearthly Child (Classic Series Season 1). This story is set several months before those events.
Basil James Carker: Mr Carker is the Headmaster at Coal Hill School. He (or possibly his sucessor) appeared in Remembrance of the Daleks (Classic Series Season 25), although in that story he wasn't named.
John and Gillian: In the 60s TV Comic's Doctor Who strip, the first and second Doctors were accompanied by his two grandchildren called John and Gillian. The novel Conundrum (Virgin New Adventures) established that these grandchildren were entirely fictional, so they are not the same John and Gillian who appear in this story.
