Description

Horg's main motivation seems to be to ensure that his daughter is given to the leader of the tribe. He often acts as the voice of the tribe in relation to the two contenders for leadership.

History

Horg was a "great leader of many men", but when orb left the sky and the great cold came they all died.[2] At some point he joined the tribe of Gum, and gave his daughter, Hur, to the leader of the tribe - Za.

When a stranger called Kal joined the tribe and became a rival for leadership, Horg was prepared to give Hur to him instead of to Za.

When the cold[3] was approaching, Za's inability to make fire was causing him to lose ground to Kal. When Kal brought the unconscious First Doctor to the caves, claiming that he had seen him make fire, this led to a confrontation between the two, which was interrupted by the arrival of Susan Foreman, Ian Chesterton, and Barbara Wright. Za imprisoned the time travellers in the Cave of Skulls.[4]

During the night, Old Mother stole Za's knife and freed the prisoners. Za and Hur discovered this, Za knocked Old Mother out, and he and Hur pursued them through the forest. Kal discovered this, and killed Old Mother, claiming that it had been Za who killed her. Horg, along with the rest of the tribe, believed this. Kal then led the tribe to the place he had first seen the Doctor and the TARDIS, and lay in wait for the escapees. When they arrived, they were carrying a wounded Za on a stretcher.[5]

Kal claimed that Za had killed Old Mother, but the Doctor proved to the tribe that it had actually been Kal who did this. They led the tribe to drive out Kal. Horg joined in this action, and then Za resumed his place as leader. Za imprisoned the TARDIS crew, and persuaded them to make fire for him. When the time travellers managed to escape through a ruse, Za led the tribe - including Horg - in pursuit, but they were just too late to reach the TARDIS before it dematerialised.[6]
