Description

Kal is something of a liar.[2]

History

Kal's tribe died in the last cold, and he was taken in by the tribe of Gum.[3] He became a rival to Za, the established leader of the tribe. When the cold[4] was approaching, Za's inability to make fire was causing him to lose ground to Kal. Kal encountered the First Doctor, who he saw lighting his pipe. Thinking that this firemaker might give him the victory over Za, Kal knocked the Doctor unconscious, and took him back to the tribe's caves, claiming that he had seen this old man make fire. This led to a confrontation between the him and Za, which was interrupted by the arrival of Susan Foreman, Ian Chesterton, and Barbara Wright. Za imprisoned the time travellers in the Cave of Skulls.[5]

During the night, Old Mother stole Za's knife and freed the prisoners. Za and Hur, Za's mate discovered this, Za knocked Old Mother out, and he and Hur pursued them through the forest. Kal discovered that the prisoners had gone, and interrogated Old Mother. Angry when he found out that she had helped them to escape, he killed her and blamed it on Za. He then led the tribe to the place he had first seen the Doctor and the TARDIS, and lay in wait for the escapees. When they arrived, they were carrying a wounded Za on a stretcher.[6]

Kal claimed that Za had killed Old Mother, but the Doctor proved to the tribe that it had actually been Kal who did this. They led the tribe to drive out Kal, and Za resumed his place as leader. Kal, however, sneaked back to the tribe's caves, killing a man who was guarding the secret entrance to the Cave of Skulls. He then confronted Za, and the two fought. Za won the fight, and killed Kal.[7]
