Professor Yana is the alias assumed by The Master after using a Chameleon Arch.
History
Although Yana believes he was found as a small boy on the shores of The Silver Devestation, this is most likely a false memory, as The Master would presumably have been a fully grown adult when using the Chameleon Arch.
It is unknown how long The Master had assumed this alias, but Chantho states that she has been working for him for seventeen years.
Yana spent his time working on a rocket designed to take a large number of passengers to a place known only as 'Utopia' when he met the Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones and Captain Jack Harkness, who helped him complete his work.
Whilst working together, Martha noticed that Yana carried a fob watch identical to that of The Doctor's when he assumed his own alias of John Smith. Yana had never opened the watch, and was not really aware of its existence, due to a perception filter. After Martha's comments, Yana opened it, and it transformed him back into the Master, effectively killing Yana.
Abilities
Yana had a great deal of scientific knowledge. Whilst working on the rocket, he showed great aptitude for improvisation, even using food sources to replace certain components.
