The Sonic Screwdriver is a tool that has been used by most incarnations of the Doctor.

History
It seems likely that the first use of the sonic screwdriver was by the first Doctor, who used an unspecified "sonic device" to escape from a Sou(ou)shi ship[1]. The first verified use of it, though, was when he used it to unscrew a screw[2] The Doctor used it frequently, going through a number of sonic screwdrivers (or at least sonic screwdriver designs) before his last one was destroyed by a Terileptil[3]. He subsequently recovered an older sonic screwdriver from a Parallel Universe where he had died.[4]
Uses
The sonic screwdriver has proved to have a wide variety of uses. Although it is unclear if every model of sonic screwdriver is capable of all of these. Uses seen so far include:
- Opening locks[5]
- Unscrewing screws[6]
- Exploding mines[7]
- Performing medical scans[8]
- Obtaining money from cash machines[9]
Limitations
The sonic screwdriver cannot unlock a deadlock seal.[10]
