Companion(s)

Ian Chesterton

Ian Chesterton is a science teacher from Coal Hill School, 1963. In An Unearthly Child he and colleague Barbara Wright were intrigued by the strange behaviour of one of their pupils, Susan Foreman. They followed her home to a junkyard where Susan and the Doctor had parked the TARDIS. In a confrontation with the Doctor they forced their way into the TARDIS. The Doctor took exception to this and whisked them away. Later in the story, he realised he was wrong to do so and decided to try to get them home. During The Edge of Destruction the TARDIS attempted to communicate with its crew telepathically, causing the Doctor to accuse Ian and Barbara of sabotaging the ship. However, when the Doctor realised that they were not responsible, his relationship with them warmed considerably.

Recurring and Historical Characters

King James was James I of England and James VI of Scotland. He was a Protestant king ruling two countries with Catholic minorities who felt themselves to be oppressed.

Robert Cecil was a courtier of James' and one of the main people responsible for uncovering the Gunpowder Plot.

Robert Catesby was the ringleader of a group of Catholic plotters who planned to use gunpowder to blow up Parliament during its state opening. This would kill almost all of the English nobility and they hoped to install a new Catholic monarch in the wake of the attack.

Guy Fawkes, also known as John Johnson was one of Catesby's plotters. His role was to light the powder, which would - if things had gone to plan - have killed him. In reality he was arrested shortly before he was able to light the powder.
